Good morning East Atlanta!

Wow. We eclipsed 5,000 readers yesterday. I guess we’re doing something right?

We can’t thank you enough for being subscribers and for reading this little newsletter every week. If you’re enjoying the Anthem, please tell a friend. If you’re not enjoying it… tell an enemy?

Anyway, we’ve got a great weekend ahead of us… Let’s get into this week’s Anthem 👇

The Anthem is made possible in part by El Tesoro, a neighborhood treasure serving good quality food at reasonable prices.

🌯 El Tesoro PSA: You can go straight to the bar & order your drinks & chips & salsa without standing in line… Thank us later.

🍺 In news that should surprise no one, The Local does not allow children… at all. An out-of-towner learned this the hard way, left a one-star review, and got a reply from the owner.

🍕 Small Fry is now doing Pizza Wontons. In their opinion, that’s the only responsible way for ranch and pizza to intermingle…

🥟 Estrellita is doing Sinigang Soup Dumplings for a limited time: ground stewed Sinigang pork belly wrapped in handcrafted xiao long bao filled with their classic Sinigang soup. Dine-in only, now through Saturday.

🍑 Goat cheese in a cocktail? a mano is making it work in their new Peach Pie, built on Japanese whisky and peach oolong with amaro and a lemon-biscoff foam. Unexpected, and worth settling the debate at the bar.

🥩 Uncle Phill's launched a loyalty app so you can order direct, skip the line, and rack up points toward free food. It’s worth saying… ordering directly here or at any restaurant is the best way to make sure your favorite spots don’t lose fees to the big players like Uber Eats and Doordash - Connor

🏆 Tony's is handing out limited-edition (EXTREMELY AWESOME) World Cup stickers this week at Sceptre, one per beef or hot dog order while supplies last. I got one last night… both the sticker and the Italian beef were worth it. - Connor

🦐 Ticonderoga Club rolled out Captain B's Summer Specials: a real Ipswich clam roll on Mondays and Tuesdays only, plus Calabash shrimp on the dinner menu.

🍸 Kitty Dare added a new cocktail called the Homa to their seasonal lineup: bold, a little sweet, and made to turn heads. Part of a fresh four-drink menu.

🍤 The Little Hippo in Avondale Estates added a Buffalo Shrimp Hoagie special, popcorn shrimp in buffalo sauce with blue cheese and B&B pickles, $16 with a side.

🧡 Leftie Lee's is closing its retail chapter after three years. Last regular brunch service is July 24-26, and they're welcoming goodbyes in the meantime. Not forever, they say, just this chapter.

🍵 Stereo put matcha and Basque cheesecake in the same sentence, and the result is a Basque Matcha Cheesecake topped with strawberries. Day coffee or night cocktail, it works either way.

🍦 Jeni's x Ted Lasso: Biscuits with the Boss ice cream drops 7/21, at Krog Street Market or online.

🍔 Red's Beergarden is adding a cheeseburgeravailable starting today through mid-August. Beef or Beyond patty with American cheese, pickles, red onion, lettuce, and mayo on a salt and pepper bun.

This week’s events are brought to you by EastLake Tree Services. Speaking of updates, is it time to prune some trees in your yard? Get an opinion from a certified arborist on the tree that is leaning over your home? Request an estimate here.

Introducing… Lily

Neighborhood: Belvedere Park

About: Lily has just been through cancer treatments and is doing well on the other side! She is a Pitbull Chihuahua mix from Albuquerque, NM. She loves cuddles and basking in the sun. She is one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met.

Fun Fact/Special Talent: She loves to "dance" for treats - jumping up and twirling are her specialties.

Thank you to Jenny for sharing Lily with us.

This week’s Updates are presented by our neighbors at The Spotted Trotter, a boutique charcuterie house and butcher shop on Moreland making house-cured salami, fine meats, and cheeses. At The Spotted Trotter, every ingredient is responsibly handled with respect, from the farm to your table. Anthem readers get 15% off online or in-store with code ANTHEM.

🚂 Ever wanted to take a train from Atlanta to Athens (or Augusta, Milledgeville, Macon, or Savannah)? Make your voice heard. GDOT is conducting a feasibility survey and looking for input from Georgia residents. Learn more about the project here, and take the survey here. Note: the survey only focuses on Atlanta to Savannah for some reason, but the route would go through all the cities mentioned in this paragraph.

🎨 Bellwood Coffee shared that a new mural of Jovita Moore is in development in coordination with her family. The mural comes in response to widespread criticism of their decision to paint over an existing mural of Moore, a long-time Atlanta news anchor, on a wall of their new Grant Park location.

📚 The DeKalb County Public Library is taking submissions for Between the Stacks, its teen zine. Teens can submit up to three works of art or writing on this issue's theme, History, through July 31.

🚨 Slow down, folks. Operation Southern Slowdown is in effect for the rest of the week. Georgia State Patrol is cracking down on speeders. Last year, 52,990 citations and warnings for speeding were issued across 5 Southern states.

🤮 WASH YOUR VEGGIES! There’s a nasty new parasite causing stomach bugs that appears to be connected to unwashed fruits and veggies. Raspberries are seen as a prime culprit with all those nooks and crannies providing places for the parasite to hide.

🏪 Belvedere Plaza is getting a face lift! Decide DeKalb Development Authority approved a $3 million grant to help with the renovation of Belvedere Plaza on Memorial, which lost its foundational tenant, Kroger, a couple of years ago.

🚕 Waymo is taking over. Unfortunately, Atlanta Uber drivers are reporting a 50% decrease in earnings as a result.
